Default Network Test Application

Network test application to see whether your connection is up to making a SINGLE VoIP call with reasonable quality.

User Guide for Test Results

Prerequisites:

- Only works on Windows
- Requires the .Net Framework v2. This is installed by default with versions of Windows from XP Service Pack 2 on. If you don't have it a prompt will pop up when the application is installed informing you that it's required. It can then be downloaded from the Microsoft site using the link below:

Legend:
Left Axis:

- Blue Line represents packets sent per second. The test typically aims to get a 64kbps stream going to emulate a single g711 RTP stream. The packet rate to try and acheive this is set at 50 packets per second, the packet payload in the test is 160 Bytes (it's higher than the 40pps needed to take into account slower PCs). The packet rate may be above or below this for a couple of reasons:
- When sending eahc computer has slightly different vagaries about process and thread scheduling due to availbale resources so the rate can be less than 50 per second set by the test,
- When receiving the line represents a measurement of the packets arriving off the network so if there is a problem with the conenction this rate will drop below 50.

- Red Line, represents packet loss and is the most critical factor in the test result. If a red line is present across the whole test it means there is consistent packet loss on your connection and it will have a noticeable impact on any time sensitive traffic such as VoIP.

- Orange Line, represents packets that arrive outside of a theoretical jitter buffer. For the purposes of the test the buffer is set at a very generous 2 seconds, most jitter buffers are less than 200ms, so if an orange line shows up then something very strange is going on.

Right Axis:
- Pink Line, represents Maximum Jitter for each 2 second measurement interval. After packet loss this is the next biggest thing that affects call quality. If this starts straying to consistently over 150ms then it will become noticeable on a call.

- Yellow Line, represents Average Jitter or in this case average packet arrival time since it doesn't take into account the spacing between the packets being sent. In a perfect test this will be 20ms, the rate at which packets are being sent.

This is what a good network test result will look like.

This is what a very bad test will look like.

That normally just means the server is busy and you should wait 10 seconds and try starting the test a few more times. If it still fails the best idea is to do what it says .

Default Running on Mac OS X

My calls suffer from echo and words being clipped so I want to run the network test application (I'm using NTL for BB) but it doesn't seem to run on my Mac. Any ideas?

It's a PC only tool unfortunately. Try this tool instead:
